ARTICLE: WHAT ARE VOICE COILS

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered what is that odd-looking object sitting right at the point of a speaker cone? It may look like an insignificant part of a speaker but believe it or not, that very object is responsible for producing magnetic currents which leads to the production of sound. That thing is known as a voice coil. Many of you might have no idea what importance this device brings to breathe life into a speaker.

A voice coil is the lump/coil of wire attached to the apex of a loudspeaker cone. It provides the force to the cone by the reaction of a magnetic field to the current passing through it. The term is also used for voice coil linear motors, such as those used to move the heads inside hard disk drives, which produce a larger force and move a longer distance but work on a similar concept

HOW DOES THE VOICE COIL WORK?

When these things convey current through the voice coil, a magnetic field is created. This occurrence causes the voice coil to react to the magnetic field from a permanent magnet fixed to the speaker's body, thereby moving the cone of the speaker. By applying an audio waveform to the voice coil, the cone will reproduce the sound pressure waves, corresponding to the original input signal. From this we can get a better picture of how sound is actually produced from a speaker
